Learning to read your pet properly

The real signals are ones you can see yourself. In dogs, a loose wagging body means something very different from a stiff one with a high, fast tail. Yawning, lip-licking and turning away are stress signals, not tiredness. In cats, slow blinking is affection, a twitching tail-tip is irritation, and a cat that hides for a whole day is telling you something worth taking seriously.

What matters most is knowing your own animal's normal. A change from their usual eating, drinking, toileting or sleeping is the signal that deserves attention — and that is a judgement you are far better placed to make than any software.
