Choosing a format, and why the wrong one causes trouble

Most conversions happen for one of two reasons: a website will not accept what your phone produced, or a file is too large because it is in a format that suits a different job. Knowing which format suits which job saves repeating the exercise.

What each format is actually for

JPG

Built for photographs. Discards detail the eye is poor at noticing, which makes small files. Cannot store transparency, and every re-save loses a little more — so avoid editing and re-saving a JPG repeatedly. The safe choice for any official upload.

PNG

Lossless, and it supports transparency. Right for signatures, logos, screenshots and anything with sharp edges or text. Wrong for photographs, where it produces very large files for no visible gain.

WebP

Meaningfully smaller than JPG at the same quality, and it handles transparency. Excellent for your own website. Still refused by plenty of government and exam portals, so do not use it for a submission unless it is explicitly listed.

PDF

Not an image format but a document one. Useful when a form asks for a document rather than a photo, or when several pages need to travel as one file.

The traps worth knowing

My transparent PNG came out with a white background

That is JPG doing what JPG does — it has no way to store transparency, so the transparent areas have to become some colour, and white is the sane default. If you need the transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead. This catches people out most often with signatures, which is exactly when it matters.

Converting PNG to JPG made the file bigger, not smaller

Unusual but possible with a simple graphic. PNG is very efficient at flat areas of solid colour, which is what a logo or a screenshot of text mostly is; JPG is efficient at the messy gradients of a photograph. Match the format to the content and the size follows.

Will converting improve the quality?

No — nothing can recover detail already lost. Converting a heavily compressed JPG to PNG gives you a large file containing exactly the same damaged picture. Convert to change what a file is, not to repair it.

My iPhone file will not open

iPhones default to HEIC, which many browsers cannot read. Set Settings → Camera → Formats to Most Compatible, or send the photo to yourself on WhatsApp first, which converts it to JPG in transit.

Does my file leave the device?

No. The conversion runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, which is the point when the file is an ID document.
