How to calculate a tip
A tip is a percentage of the bill. Multiply the bill by the tip percent and divide by 100 to get the tip amount, then add it to the bill for the total. Divide the total by the number of people to split it evenly.
How much should I tip in India?
Tipping is optional in India. At restaurants, 5–10% is common when a service charge isn't already added. Check your bill — if a service charge is included, an extra tip is entirely your choice.
Worked example
A bill of ₹2,400 with a 10% tip adds ₹240, giving ₹2,640. Split between four people that is ₹660 each.
Tip on the pre-tax amount if you want the percentage to reflect the food and service rather than the tax. Tipping on the post-tax total is not wrong, it simply makes the effective tip a little larger than the number you chose.
Splitting the bill without an argument
An even split is the fastest and is fair often enough, but it stops being fair once one person had a starter and two drinks and another had a soup. A workable middle path is to pull out the one or two outlier items, settle those separately, then split what is left evenly along with the tip.
- Round up, not down. Settling on ₹700 each rather than ₹687.50 saves everyone counting change, and the difference covers the tip.
- Decide before the bill arrives. Agreeing on "split evenly" at the start avoids the awkward conversation at the end.
- One person pays, the rest transfer. A single card payment plus UPI transfers is quicker than five cards, and the exact per-person figure is right here.
- Shared dishes are everyone's. Splitting a shared plate item by item is where bill-splitting usually turns unpleasant.

Should I tip on the amount before or after GST?
Either is fine. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount; this calculator applies the tip to whatever bill figure you enter.
Can I split unevenly?

Is a service charge the same as a tip?
No. A service charge is added to the bill by the restaurant; a tip is given voluntarily by you. In India a service charge cannot be made compulsory, so you may ask for it to be removed and tip separately if you prefer.
How do I tip a round amount instead of a percentage?
Adjust the percentage until the total lands on the figure you want. Many people simply round the bill up to the nearest hundred, and the calculator will show you what percentage that works out to.
Do I tip on delivery orders and cab rides?
There is no fixed expectation. Rounding the fare or the order up is the common habit rather than a set percentage, and at small stalls and cafes tipping is generally not expected at all.
